Spread Your Wings

German title: Der Junge und die Wildgänse
Even the thought of a holiday with his father in Provence triggers discomfort and defiance in Thomas. After the separation of his parents, the “crazy” scientist is rather embarrassing to him. His worst nightmares come true when it turns out that there is hardly any network coverage in this rural area and therefore no chance of playing exciting computer games. His father may try very hard to get the boy enthusiastic about his research projects, but what is so fascinating about how a few birds get from A to B? It takes time for Thomas to understand what his father’s idea is all about: He teaches orphaned goslings that they have to follow a certain flight pattern to survive and find enough food in the different seasons. But this is not so easy, because the animals have to be influenced by humans before they can recognise them as “teachers”. And here finally comes the boy’s chance to have a very special experience: Since he is present when the goslings hatch, they recognise him as a “mother”. Now all he needs is a suitable flying device, and the adventurous journey can begin.
