The Cord of Life
Original title: Qui dai
German title: Qui dai - Schnur des Lebens
Arlo, a Mongolian electronic musician, does not know what to expect from life. One night in a club in Beijing, he receives a strange phone call from his mother, who has Alzheimerʼs disease. She lives with his brother in a city flat and is treated like a prisoner. Arlo sets out to visit his family. He can hardly bear to see her condition and the way he finds her – unkempt and completely disoriented. Arlo makes a decision and takes his mother on one last fulfilling trip. A long-awaited journey back to their home, back to the grasslands. The search begins, but this road trip initially proves difficult as her condition continues to deteriorate. She constantly runs away and gets lost. Therefore, Arlo ties himself to his mother with a cord. It is like an umbilical cord that connects him to his mother’s thoughts, his hometown and his culture. Slowly but surely, Arlo realises what matters in life and that there is a chance of true happiness for him too.
