Ivan, a peasant’s son who is considered a fool, is given the task of finding out who is trampling down his father’s wheat field night after night. He cannot believe his eyes when he discovers a powerful, mystical white horse. When he tries to catch the animal, it gets caught in a deep swamp. Ivan cannot help but rescue the wondrous horse and release it. In return, he is given two black horses and a little humpbacked horse, which can talk and is supposed to stand by his side in times of need. And indeed, Ivan will soon need its help. When he wants to sell the two black horses at the market, the tsar simply confiscates them without payment. Only after the little humpbacked horse interfered does Ivan get his money and is hired as a stable master as compensation. But soon the tsar asks for the impossible. Ivan is to catch the firebird. But this magical bird cannot be defeated by strength and power alone. Luckily, Ivan is advised by the little humpbacked horse that resorts to a clever ruse.
