Kartomi is a little lout who likes to paint on everything he can lay his hands on in his town. One day he meets little stray dog Boxi. The boy and the dog become best friends. As a first good deed they clean the city from all graffiti. Soon they find a treasure map and together they embark on an adventure that takes them all over the city and its outskirts.

A trek of prairie schooners is on its way to the Wild West in 1863. The Canary family, led by their father, are seeking a better life, as are the other travellers. When the father dies in an accident, his twelve-year-old daughter Martha Jane has to take over the responsibility. It was about to be ceremoniously unveiled after its restoration. But when 13-year-old Julka and her best friend Olek arrive at the museum, there is an explosion and the painting shatters into a thousand pieces. Julka’s aunt, the museum director, is shocked.
