Orphan Žito grows up well cared for by an old farmwoman. She shares her wisdom with him and teaches him to be an honest young man with a pronounced sense of justice. When he, like all young men, is conscripted to perform military service as a soldier at the royal court, he quickly reaches his moral limits. He secretly uses his task as a tax collector to free the citizens from the taxes.
