East village and West village used to be united. A wise tribal chief led the two villages, which are separated by a gorge, to considerable prosperity. Both sides have essential goods so they can only survive together. But after their father’s death, two sons fought for supremacy and separated the two halves of the village. The bridge over the gorge was torn down and contacts were broken off. Now East village particularly suffers from food shortage. Halvdan grows up there. He is a limping and quiet boy, the old blacksmith’s grandson. During his lonely forays through the forest he meets Meia, a wild girl who he cannot get out of his head. When he learns that she is the West village chief’s daughter, they secretly begin to empty the storeroom and smuggle food to the East side. But their friendship does not remain unnoticed and stirs up old conflicts.
