Spring 1945: Eleven-year-old Felix lives with his mother Anna in Munich. His father Bernd, a well-known trumpeter, is at the front. When bombardments of the city do not stop, Anna and Felix flee to the countryside. They set up a new home on the farm of a deceased aunt.

Lola is eleven years old and lives with her mother Loretta on an old houseboat by the river. Actually, she could be quite happy if her father had not “vanished into thin air” two years ago. She often dreams that he comes back. She no longer goes to the hairdresser and lets her red hair, which her father liked so much, just grow. She still wears her old sneakers, even though they are all too small.

Twelve-year-old Madison has set her mind on becoming as successful as her father Timo, a professional cyclist. Timo, who named his daughter after a discipline in track cycling, namely two-man team riding, often overtaxes Madison. Although she still has a year to go, she is scheduled to take part in the Federal German training camp this summer.

Old Pettson lives all alone on a small farm in Sweden, where he spends his time tinkering and feeding his hens. Just as he is about to invent a machine for sweeping up breadcrumbs from the table, he is visited by his neighbour, Beda Andersson. She has a present for him: a box with lots of paper and ... a little tomcat. She has found him terribly frightened in the woods and saved him from Gustavsson’s hunting dog.

Since their last great adventures, ten-year-old “deeply gifted” Rico and highly gifted Oskar two years his junior are best friends. Now Oskar stays overnight at the Doretti’s home for the first time. To mark the occasion, they go to a pizzeria and afterwards, they attend the weekly bingo at the retirement home of the “grey bumblebees”.

The holidays get off to an exciting start for Tarun and his girlfriend Alice, because top secret documents are stolen from Tarun's mother Jaswinder's research base in Ireland. As a dedicated marine researcher, Jaswinder is working on a project that aims to reduce plastic waste in the oceans.
