Original title: Als Hitler das rosa Kaninchen stahl
German title: Als Hitler das rosa Kaninchen stahl
Berlin, February 1933: Hitler and the National Socialist Party clearly show their power. Even nine-year-old Anna notices this when at a carnival party, some boys do not dress up but simply appear in Nazi uniforms. Shortly afterwards, Anna’s father Arthur Kemper, a famous theatre critic, writer and Nazi opponent, receives a secret tip that the Nazis want to arrest him. Arthur flees abroad overnight. Anna, her older brother Max and her mother Dorothea are to join him later. The children are not allowed to tell anyone anything and have to pack their suitcases. Only the most basic necessities are allowed, plus a book and a toy. With a heavy heart Anna leaves her beloved pink stuffed toy rabbit with their housekeeper Heimpi.
Their new life in Switzerland is not easy. The family has to cope with sharing only one room, there is a lack of money and news from Germany is frightening. Above all, Anna misses Heimpi’s care. But this is only the beginning of their flight, in the course of which Anna and her family face difficult challenges.
