Cotton Queen
Teenager Nafisa grows up in a Sudanese village. She helps out almost every day in the cotton fields supervised by her grandmother, the matriarch of the village. There are many stories surrounding the old woman Al-Sit, one of which earned her the name “Cotton Queen” due to her rebellion against the colonial rulers. When a young businessman from abroad moves into the mansion of the former colonial power, believed by many to be cursed, the traditional way of life and work of the people is about to change. Plans to grow modified cotton threaten to replace traditional farming methods. While many girls in the village have their eyes on the rich newcomer, Nafisa has completely different thoughts in her head. She dreams of taking a different path, leaving some of the traditions behind and emancipating herself, but her grandmother has already planned her future. Nafisaʼs world is increasingly shaken, and one night the young woman is faced with a momentous decision.
