Where the White Cranes Dance
Original title: Tam, gdje tanzujut sterchi
German title: Wo die weißen Kraniche tanzen
Vanya has lived surrounded by white walls, white furniture and white clothes for as long as he can remember. Everything is white – even he himself. When the eight-year-old boy has to leave this place where everyone has cherished and nurtured him, he is frightened. He doesnʼt understand whatʼs going on. After a flight on which the boy wants nothing more than to return to his familiar white home, the plane lands in the middle of nowhere. There, in a small Yakut village, he is greeted by people with a cattle cart. Vanya is no longer surrounded by an all-white world, but by a surprisingly colourful one. However, he is unable to explore this new universe on his own because he is unable to walk. He senses a real home, though – with his mother, his father and his two brothers. And Vanya can see miracles – things that donʼt fit into this world. But only his mother believes him. When she dies giving birth to Vanyaʼs sibling, his world is shaken. More than ever, he wants to be strong like a real hero, to be able to run and visit her in the place where the white cranes dance.
