In 1981, New Zealand is in turmoil over the tour of the South African national rugby team, the Springboks. Protests against racism and apartheid criticizing the tour are dividing the country. Josh, 17 years old and an outsider, doesn’t really want anything to do with any of this. The teenager with Māori roots lives in Dunedin with his mother and older brother and is more concerned with keeping his head down. That’s why he’s hesitant about joining the drama club. Unexpectedly, he discovers his talent and passion for acting there and even wants to audition for an Australian acting school. But his family has other plans for him: he should become a rugby player just like his brother and play for the school team. For a school, off all things, whose principal is strictly against any form of support for the demonstrations. While his best friend Grace takes part in the city’s protests, which draw attention to the injustice against the Maori as well, Josh also realizes that he can no longer sit on the sidelines.
