Paula lives in a society whose population is divided – as in films – into Main Characters, Supporting Characters and Outtakes. Her fa ther used to be a famous Main Character who was murdered in the “great massacre”. Therefore, Paula gets the chance to move up into this category, even though her mother is only a Supporting Character with limited dialogue. “Your father is somewhere between the cuts, watching us”, is one of those sentences. In preparation for the exam to become a Main Character, Paula has to create an emotional monologue with stirring music. She has written this monologue in honour of her father. It begins with the words: “If you were still here”. For some inexplicable reason, her “heart reader”, which generates her music, causes problems. The sounds are shrill and distorted. Assuming that something is wrong with her feelings, Paula decides to look for flashbacks of her father in the archives. But no flashbacks can be found there. Gradually, Paula uncovers a family secret that leads her into the dangerous zone of the Outtakes
