Matho and Bill belong to the Lakota tribe and live on the Pine Ridge Reservation in the US state of South Dakota. Twelve-year-old Matho finally wants to become a man. Together with a group of other boys, he breaks into houses to sell the stolen goods afterwards. Meanwhile, he tries to avoid his violent father. When the latter beats him up one evening, Matho flees to a supposedly safe shelter for homeless children. However, this turns out to be a place where drugs are sold. Like the other boys, Matho is now forced to deal drugs at his school. Bill dreams of becoming a poodle breeder. He is 23 and a father of two sons. He does odd jobs to provide for his family and escape the petty criminal milieu. By chance, he meets wealthy Tim, who employs him on his farm. At first, Bill enjoys the comfortable life that Tim and his wife offer him. But soon he has to realise that Timʼs tolerant and benevolent nature is only a façade.
