German title: White Berry
When Grace was a small child, she had to flee Burundi with her mother and brother. Grace suffers from albinism, which caused the family to be persecuted in their home country. The disease causes Grace’s skin to be unusually pale and sensitive to light, and she has poor eyesight. But even in her new home, the Netherlands, the now 17-year-old repeatedly experiences exclusion. She is insulted at school, called a freak by other residents of her mainly black neighbourhood. She only lives out her passion for dancing secretly in her darkened room. Then she meets Kya and her street dance group “African Goddesses”, and joins them. Kya encourages Grace to live her African identity. Together they rehearse dance performances to realise their big dream of participating in a major dance competition in Paris. Grace begins to neglect school and undergoes cosmetic treatments to make her skin darker. She must decide how far she is willing to go to fit in.
