13-year-old Vitya Kasatkin has an unusual hobby: Japanese sumo wrestling. His love for this sport was instilled in him by his father, a sports journalist, who left the family for Japan eight years ago and has never got in touch since then. Now Vitya lives with his mother, but he is desperate to see his dad again. At school, the “elephant boy” is often teased, and Vitya defends himself tooth and nail. Seeing the headmaster becomes unavoidable, but one day such a visit brings the boy a lasting friendship. In the headmaster’s outer office he meets Gelya, a girl of the same age, who is equally impulsive and said to be a “difficult teenager”. She encourages Vitya to take part in the next international sumo tournament in Japan. He hopes to meet his father there and to persuade him to return. Vitya finds an ideal coach in the outsider Alexei Rodionov, and they train hard to gether. The plan seems to work, as Vitya comes first in the Russian qualifying competition. But then Corona closes all national borders
