Follow the Light
Original title: Hikari wo oikakete
German title: Folge dem Licht
Due to a lack of prospects, especially for agriculture, the Japanese village of Ebigasawa is becoming depopulated. Everyone is turning away from it, but Akira and his father Ryota, who has failed in Tokyo, return there. This is not an easy decision. In the last weeks before the village school is finally closed, shy Akira finds it difficult to make friends. One day, as he is cycling home across the rice fields, he sees Maki on the roof of a house and is fascinated by this sight. The girl is said to be whimsical and aggressive. Maki avoids school. Tamura is also a stranger in his class and is often bullied. Akira forms delicate bonds of friendship with both children. The three of them are united by their common experience of the green light: a sudden appearance in the sky above the fields. When the boys follow the light on the horizon, they discover a mysterious crop circle and Maki in the middle of it. They promise each other to keep this occurrence a secret of their conspiratorial community. But when Maki and Akira get closer, this arouses jealousy in Tamura, and he reveals the secret.
